Free vs Paid website
1. A free website means you build it yourself or have a volunteer build it for free using an online website builder tool or website hosting company that offers a free plan (with limited features) and free subdomain (address of your website). This website is an example of a WIX free site. It is a simple portfolio site, it doesn't need to be found by Google (we are very small and most clients are word of mouth or via CFD). WIX has provided a free domain name https://karkuwebdesigns.wixsite.com/portfolio (and has an advertising banner on the top of the site). There are no costs associated with the site now or into the future (subject to WIX T&Cs that could change)... BUT it may make the site appear less professional than purchasing a custom domain e.g. karkuwebdesigns.com.au and free plan sites, such as this one, and may display advertising on the website. It may also impact your search ability via Google and other web browsers. If you only need a portfolio for selected clients or a basic web presence this is probably all you need (and you can use a QR code instead of the domain in promotional material). It is important to think about your end goals before deciding to use a free plan. If a volunteer is helping building the site for you, it is most likely that when the site is 'handed over' to you with some training, you will then be the owner of the site and be responsible for all future editing and maintenance of the site. This will occur once the site is finished, published and can be viewed by the public. If you do not wish to maintain the site yourself, you can employ web developers to do this for you at a cost.

Custom Domains
2. If you buy a domain only (for 1 year it would cost approx. $15-25), you WON'T be able to connect it to your site unless your website has been 'upgraded' (you have purchased a Premium Plan with them). See WIX Premium Plans as an example. If you have already purchased a custom domain with a different web builder or web hosting company there may be significant delays, issues or costs in the transfer of the domain to a different provider. It may be best to wait and purchase your domain and plan with the same provider.

Paid Plans
3. You will need to outlay a minimum of $250.00 upfront to pay for the cheapest plan. For example, a WIX Light Plan currently costs $21.00 per month but must be paid for 12 months at a time upfront - it also includes a free custom domain for 1 year. You can pay monthly, but the cost will go up significantly e.g. $33 for a month, and you will not get a the free domain included. This WIX 'Light' plan has basic features only, if you wanted functionality for a small online shop or booking platform, you would approximately double the upfront costs e.g. $500 for 12 months paid upfront.
